2012 Evening Standard Awards Honor Dench, Boyle, and More

Honoring the best in British theatre achievement in 2012, The Evening Standard Awards took place recently, and the winners included Nick Payne's Constellations (The Royal Court Upstairs) as Best Play, Nicholas Hytner as Best Director for Timon of Athens (National's Olivier), Simon Russell Beale as Best Actor for Collaborators (National's Cottesloe), and winning The Natasha Richardson Award for Best Actress was Hattie Morahan, for her acclaimed performance in A Doll's House at The Young Vic. The Ned Sherrin Award For Best Musical went to Sweeney Todd (Chichester Festival and Adelphi), while Soutra Gilmour won for Best Design, for Inadmissible Evidence (Donmar Warehouse) and Antigone (National's Olivier).

Several special awards were also given out, including an award to Dame Judi Dench "For her contribution to world theatre." Winning the "Beyond Theatre Award," meanwhile, were stage and film director Danny Boyle and his creative team for their work for the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
