Let's hear it for opera patrons! This week, Houston Grand Opera announced a generous $2 million gift from patrons Mr. John G. Turner and Mr. Jerry G. Fischer of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The announcement occurred at an exclusive, invitation-only event to meet director Carlus Padrissa, director of La Fura dels Baus (the genre-defying theater company behind Barcelona's 1992 Olympic Opening ceremony). Padrissa is in Houston preparing for the launch of the HGO's first Ring cycle in the spring of 2014. Turner and Fischer have a long history of supporting Houston Grand Opera, including this season's Tristan and Isolde. Mr. Turner is a member of the HGO Board of Directors and serves as Co-Chair of the Studio & Training Committee.
"We are eager to help HGO bring Carlus Padrissa's production of The Ring to Texas," said Turner and Fischer. "It tells the story concisely while offering amazing, cutting-edge imagery. We are confident this is the right production at the right time and are proud to help make this important artistic project come to fruition. It's about time."
