Deconstructing Dogberry: The David Ogden Stiers Interview

David Ogden Stiers has been the voice talent for many animated features, including the character of Cogsworth for Disney's Beauty and the Beast, as well as serving as the film's narrator.

Angela Mitchell: Okay, in closing, and apologies in advance – but please prepare for a total geek moment from me. You've done work with so many wonderful animated films, from Beauty and the Beast and Lilo & Stitch, to Spirited Away. But I have to tell you, that while I adored Cogsworth, I loved your narration of Beauty and the Beast even more. I put it on mixes. I played it in the car. Just that opening ninety seconds or so of the opening, where you told the story of the prince. It’s absolutely perfect. It’s still my favorite part of the entire movie.

David Ogden Stiers: Oh my gosh, that’s so nice to hear. Working on Much Ado, Grace and Greta both mentioned Cogsworth and Beauty and the Beast, and believe me, this old man’s heart just soared.

Angela Mitchell: It's stunning -- for me it remains one of the most beautiful voiceovers of all time in film.

David Ogden Stiers: I am so happy with that. I’m just wreathed in smiles to hear that.

Angela Mitchell: David, thank you so much for sharing your insights with our readers, especially during the holidays and in the midst of production.

David Ogden Stiers: You’re so welcome – it was my pleasure.
